Course Overview

This course follows Spanish Language 4 and aims to prepare non beginners intending Honours students of Hispanic Studies for their compulsory period abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.

The course will develop further Spanish language skills, expanding on the vocabulary and introducing formal documents and letters. Classes on grammatical and linguistic analysis will contribute to the development of both sets of skills. In addition students will complete a structured self learning programme of aural study and grammatical reinforcement study.

Course Description

Pre-requisite(s): SP 2026 (or SP2526)

Building on work done in SP 2026 (or SP 2526), the course will develop further language skills, both receptive (aural comprehension capacity through tuition based on audio and video material; reading comprehension and expanding vocabulary) and productive (compositions, formal letters and documents and oral language). Classes on grammatical and linguistic analysis will contribute to the development of both sets of skills. In addition students will complete a structured self learning programme of aural study and grammatical reinforcement study.

Students who have completed Spanish 4 (SP2026/SP2526) and intend to do Honours must do Spanish 5 (SP2531).

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written examination (60%), oral skills (10%), 1 in-class test (10%), 4 written assessments (20%).

Resit: 1 two-hour written examination (70%), oral examination (30%).

Formative Assessment

4 formative assessments of different aspects of written Spanish language; and 1 continuously assessed formative assessment of oral Spanish language.

The above assessments are given CAS marks, and written or verbal feedback is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance is also given in written language classes; oral classes; aural classes; and reading comprehension/composition classes.
