Course Overview

MU1051 is structured to develop in tandem students individual instrumental/vocal and ensemble skills. The Music Department boasts a high quality visiting tutor staff who will provide​ access to 10 free, 1 hour, one-to-one lessons on their principal study, students can also elect to split their studies between two instruments and/or voice.​ Alongside instrumental and vocal lessons students will join one of the departments many ensembles working in weekly rehearsals towards high quality public performances. The course is assessed through an end of course tutor report.

Course Description

Students select the pieces they work on in negotiation with their instrumental/voice tutor.

Entrance to this course for non BMus students is by audition only. Students must be of ABRSM Grade 8 (or equivalent) standard or above before they can be considered for audition. Students must also be fully proficient in reading music and have a reasonable standard of music theory knowledge.
Auditions are arranged by the student contacting the Music Department during Induction Week. Prospective students will be asked to prepare one 5 minute piece for the audition which demonstrates their best abilities, and they will be asked to perform some sight reading.

Further Information & Notes

Where students are studying more than one instrument/voice, they can elect in advance to have them equally weighted, or weighted in the proportion 75% (main instrument) and 25% (second instrument) for assessment purposes.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Tutor report and essay of 2,000 words on an aspect of performance. Exemption may be granted for the essay for students with exemplary attendance at the nominated ensemble.

Resit: Students resit the failed assessment(s). Recital (for those failing tutor report); resit failed elements of the same essay (for those failing essay).

Formative Assessment

Students are being constantly assessed by their tutors in this one-to-one learning context.

Feedback

Feedback to students is on a continual basis in this one-to-one learning context. Tutors will arrange for a session to go over their comments with the student following the submission of the report.
