Course Overview

LT1009 is an introductory, intensive course for those with little or no previous exposure to Latin. Students completing this course should have a Latin vocabulary of about 400 words and a basic understanding of Latin grammar and syntax. Students successfully completing this course will be adequately prepared to attend LT1507. Students will very likely discover that their knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar/syntax is improved by their study of Latin. The etymological roots of many English words can be traced to the Latin language.

Course Description

The course will consist in a guided reading of Latin texts, in self-study grammar reviews and the study of basic vocabulary. It is an introductory intensive course for those with little or no previous exposure to Latin. One cannot expect to assimilate Latin grammar thoroughly or build an extensive vocabulary in just 12 weeks, but those who successfully complete the course are adequately prepared to attend LT 1507 Latin class.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Continuous assessment (3 one-hour in-class tests) (100%).

Resit: 1 two-hour examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

Continuous feedback to students on their progress basesd on classroom and written performance. Formative assessment will be both formal and informal.

Feedback

Summative feedback on performance will take the form of returns of written translations.
Formative feedback will mainly take the form of informal classroom feedback.
