Undergraduate Health Sciences 2014-2015

HE4008: HUMAN NUTRITION

60 credits

Level 4

First Term

Students will look at metabolic pathways; endocrinology; digestion & absorption; immunology; food analyses; dietary assessment methodology; energy requirements and expenditure; details of dietary components; body composition and anthropometry; nutrition in pregnancy, lactation and infant feeding and diseases associated with poor nutrition.

This full time course is taught in lectures spread throughout the week.  In addition, a number of practical sessions are carried out to develop skills in anthropometry, dietary assessment and analysis of nutrient content of food. 

HE4013: HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH

30 credits

Level 4

First Term

The course will introduce the principles of health services research, develop skills to critically appraise health services research and develop skills in designing and conducting health services research.

Students will develop a good understanding of the methods used in health services research and will be able to apply the theory by writing a study protocol and will be able to critically appraise existing health services research.

HE4015: HEALTH ECONOMICS

30 credits

First Term

The course will introduce the principles of health services research.  Students will develop a good understanding of the methods used in health services research and will be able to apply the theory by writing a study protocol and will be able to critically appraise existing health services research.

HE4502: HONOURS PROJECT (HUMAN NUTRITION)

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

The project allows the student to carry out an independent piece of research.

The student will develop generic skills in time management; writing long documents; oral presentations and in independent working. The student will develop subject specific research skills depending on the project chosen. This could involve quantitative or qualitative data collection or systematic review methodology and data analyses.

Students choose the project topic. The content is dependent on the type of project undertaken e.g it could range from interviewing mothers of new babies about their feeding choices to a study of media coverage of breast feeding issues. 

HE4505: HONOURS PROJECT - HEALTH PROMOTION

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

The project allows the student to carry out an independent piece of research.

The student will develop generic skills in time management; writing long documents; oral presentations and in independent working. The student will develop subject specific research skills depending on the project chosen. This could involve quantitative or qualitative data collection or systematic review methodology and data analyses.

Students choose the project topic. The content is dependent on the type of project undertaken e.g it could range from pregnant smokers to assess reasons why they smoke to a literature review on incentive schemes to reduce smoking in pregnancy.

HE4506: DISSERTATION FOR BSC HEALTH SCIENCE: HEALTH SERVICE RESEARCH

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

The project allows the student to carry out an independent piece of research.

The student will develop generic skills in time management; writing long documents; oral presentations and independent working. The student will develop subject specific research skills depending on the project. This could involve quantitative or qualitative data collection, systematic review methodology or data analyses.

Students choose the project topic. Content is dependent on the type of project undertaken - it could range from a survey of knowledge about skin cancer in outdoor workers to a literature review on the effectiveness of behavioral change on skin cancer incidence.

HE4507: DISSERTATION FOR BSC HEALTH SCIENCE:HEALTH AND SPORT

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

The project allows the student to carry out an independent piece of research.

The student will develop generic skills in time management; writing long documents; oral presentations and independent working. The student will develop subject specific research skills depending on the project chosen. This could involve quantitative or qualitative data collection or systematic review methodology and data analyses.

Students choose the project topic. The content is dependent on the type of project undertaken e.g it could range from a comparison of stair use in University Buildings to a literature review on methods designed to incorporate exercise into daily living.

HE4510: HONOURS PROJECT (HEALTH STUDIES)

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

The project allows the student to carry out an independent piece of research.

The student will develop generic skills in time management; writing long documents; oral presentations and in independent working. The student will develop subject specific research skills depending on the project chosen. This could involve quantitative or qualitative data collection or systematic review methodology and data analyses.

Students choose the project topic. The content is dependent on the type of project undertaken e.g it could range from pregnant smokers to assess reasons why they smoke to a literature review on incentive schemes to reduce smoking in pregnancy.

HE4513: HONOURS PROJECT (PART 1)

15 credits

Level 4

Second Term

During Part 1 of the project, the student will develop a research question and consider the methodology to be used to answer it and they will complete an oral presentation. 

HE4514: HONOURS PROJECT (PART 2)

45 credits

Level 4

Second Term

Part 2 of the project allows the student to carry out their research, analyse the results and write their thesis.

The student will develop generic skills in time management, writing long documents and in independent working.  The student will develop subject specific research skills such as quantitative or qualitative data collection or systematic review methodology.

The content of the course is dependent on the type of project undertaken e.g the students could collect qualitative and or quantitative data, analyse their results and write their thesis during Part 2 or they complete a systematic review on their chosen topic.
