GL4529: SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE DIGITAL IMAGING (2014-2015)

Course Overview

The subsurface course module will cover the input, storage, management, mapping and image process of seismic dataset. The module will be taught through laboratory practicals supported by short introductory lectures to the seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation and that will cover general theories, methodologies and applications. The laboratory exercises will be based on using and implementing Petrel and Midland Valley’s Move software to solve a range of issues and to highlight their use for seismic interpretation and test.

Course Description

Basics of reflection seismology. Signal theory and propagation of waves. Reflection seismic acquisition. Seismic processing fundamentals and digital filtering. Seismic interpretation for structures. Reservoir aspects of seismic interpretation. Amplitude analysis. Loading GIS datasets. Collecting digital geological data. Analysis of uncertainties in data collection and interpretation. 3D datasets, using visualisation to understand 3D geometries, and using of restoration software tools to assess the validity of models.

Further Information & Notes

The course is timetabled for a lecture session on thursday followed by practical sessions on Monday and Friday mornings. Note we will not use all of the allocated time slots, so check the timetable and notices carefully. The Computer labs will be available for use at the timetabled times for you to complete the course work and practical exercises set. You will need to complete any remaining work in your own time. The software is available in all computing labs. The exercises include datasets and applications that cover geological topics and datasets. Each exercise will include a set of deliverables (e.g. ppts, files, brief reports, posters).  The course will be entirely assessed through your individual portfolio of exercises and group work.

Formative Assessment

The students will mark each others' poster- based on a pro-forma, providing the students with peer-review of their own work. The teaching staff will complete the same forms and provide further feedback verbally to the groups. During the individual project work there will be drop-in sessions for students to get feedback on their work.
