Course Overview

This course will provide the opportunity for students to pursue in-depth exploration of a specific topic in Celtic and/or Anglo-Saxon Studies. It gives students an opportunity for intensive engagement in a specific area within the research field of an individual staff member, and can be arranged as preparatory work towards a dissertation. The content of this course may vary, but the course focuses on enhancing the student's knowledge and research skills in the specified topic. Students interested in taking the course should discuss their specific interest in advance, where possible, with the Programme Co-ordinator and a possible supervisor.

Course Description

This course will provide the opportunity for students to pursue in-depth exploration of a specific topic of interest in Celtic & Anglo-Saxon Studies, but which is not catered for in the academic session. The student will undertake intensive, supervised work on the topic in order to enhance his/her research, writing and/or language skills. The specific content of the course may vary, but the course focuses on enhancing the student's knowledge and research skills in the specified topic, and the completion of two research papers, or one paper and an examination. The course will provide students with an opportunity for intensive engagement in a specific area within the research field of an individual staff member. It can be arranged as preparatory work towards a dissertation, if the student requires intensive, supervised study in a specific area not covered by the available Honours courses. Students interested in pursuing such a course of study are expected to discuss their specific interest in advance, where possible, with the Programme Co-ordinator and a possible supervisor.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Two options: Assessment option to be agreed between student and supervisor at the beginning of the course. 1. One essay of 1,000-1,500 words, including references but excluding bibliography (30%), and one essay of 2,500-3,000 words, including references but excluding bibliography (70%) or 2. One two-hour examination (60%) and one essay of 2,000-2,500 words, including references but excluding bibliography (40%). Resit: One essay of 2,000-2,500 words, including references but excluding bibliography (100%).

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment will be provided throughout the course, in scheduled individual meetings with the supervisor. These meetings will include detailed discussion of the student's progress in preparation for the assessments.

Feedback

Feedback on the student's progress in the specified topic will be provided in scheduled individual meetings with the supervisor. The student will obtain timely and detailed written feedback on his/her written assessments.
