MS3051: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (2014-2015)

Course Overview

This course is based upon the analysis of Globalization from a comparative business and economic development perspective. Lectures are thematic so that students  learn about eg. the role of large and small businesses;  entrepreneurial environments; transition and new EU states;  privatization; supra-national organizations; cultural dimensions of international businesses and small firms; international trade; ethnic minority business and finance; the role of social capital; internationalisation and small business development; new venture capital; micro-finance. To support the lecture themes, the tutorials have students presenting an assessed case study, and write an assignment focusing upon the internationalization of a business.

  • To examine in detail a range of theories and conceptual frameworks applicable to international business, small business internationalisation, and international entrepreneurship.
  • To gain an appreciation of the international, comparative, ethnic and inter-cultural settings of international business, entrepreneurship and small business.

    Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

    Summative Assessments

    1st Attempt: 1 three-hour examination (50%); continuous assessment consisting of a graded written assignment (2500 words 30%); tutorial presentation (20%) - copies of slides will be kept for external review. Resit: 1 three-hour written examination (100%).

    Formative Assessment

    This will take place through presentation discussions and through written feedback on the assignment.

    Feedback

    Feedback is given on the presentation and the essay.

    On a less formal basis, through verbal feedback during tutorial discussions, and after tutorial presentations. Assignments are submitted through MyAberdeen/Turnitin and are available to the external examiner.
