This course will examine various examples of wall paintings produced by different cultures at different times. It will adopt a trans-historical and interdisciplinary approach to societies who have painted walls. The course will cover topics such as graffiti on city walls, frescoes on church walls, Buddhist images on cave walls, trompe l'oeil paintings on villa walls, and political paintings on the walls of state. In each case, images will be understood in relation to their physical and human context, allowing the group to construct meanings beyond the institution of the art gallery.
