EG555L: MODELLING OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (2024-2025)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:05

Course Overview

Physiological and physicochemical phenomena in biological systems involve complex interactions between tissue, blood and nutrients such as glucose. This course will introduce the principles of biofluid and soft tissue mechanics, and mass transfer phenomena relevant to biological systems. Students will develop the ability to use mathematical modelling to analyse those phenomena, and gain insight into a range of therapies from the perspective of engineering.

Course Description

This course provides insight into biological systems in terms of engineering principles. It is focused on mathematical modelling and its use in understanding and analysing biological systems and medical treatments. These may include treatments for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

The course will cover a range of interlinked topics as indicated below. Case studies will be presented and will form the basis of practical problem-solving exercises.  Lectures on relevant research at the forefront of the field will also be included.

  • Biological fluid mechanics of the blood circulatory system and cerebrospinal fluid circulation
  • Transport phenomena in biological systems, including nutrients and drug delivery
  • Soft tissue mechanics of the central nervous system
  • Advanced mathematical models and their applications to the study of biological systems
