Oil and Gas fields go through the stages of exploration, discovery, development, maturity and decommissioning. These stages each require carefully planned operations in which a range of services are contracted. This course will expose students to cases studies that document these stages and from studying these examples students will practice assessing the needs of natural resource development and matching it to the commissioning of scientific, technological and engineering services.

The course has two components: The Field Life-Cycle: A case study from the North Sea will be used as an example to teach the factors that contribute to a prospect becoming a field and a field being decommissioned, and based on this students will gain sufficient knowledge to undertake a desk-study in which they rank relinquished blocks and licences for undeveloped potential. This course component will include visits to Core and other facilities in Aberdeen (typically two trips).
New fields, New Markets, New Needs: Using a case study from a LNG field students will learn how field development is planned around resource use which includes long and complicated supply chains. This part of the course will involve an external lecturer and students will undertake a study in which they critically appraise and propose methods to improve a current development (e.g. adding EOR or CCS schemes to a project), and or proposing workarounds to real-life perturbations (changes to processing or supply methods).
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
