PD5002: MSC ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE – PROJECT

60 credits

First Term

In the final year of the MSc programme there is a course offering a small project that will be completed through self-directed learning.  The project can be either a research-based piece of work or practice development initiative related to advanced practice.

PD5003: MANAGEMENT OF EMERGENCY INJURIES FOR ADVANCED PRACTITIONERS

30 credits

Level 5

Full Year

The course is developed to prepare practitioners with a professional registration in healthcare for a clinical role as an advanced autonomous practitioner working within a range of settings such as pre-hospital, community, primary or emergency care.  The focus of this course is the development of specialist knowledge and skills related to clinical assessment, diagnosis, investigations, treatment and relevant referral pathways for patients presenting with undifferentiated range of emergency injury symptoms. 

PD5004: MSC ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE – SMALL RESEARCH PROJECT

15 credits

PD5005: FUNDAMENTALS OF CLINICAL METHOD AND DECISION MAKING

30 credits

First Term

This course is designed to prepare advanced or advancing healthcare practitioners who will be required to perform enhanced clinical assessment with enhanced autonomy with the additional comprehensive skills in History Taking and Physical Examination across major body systems. 

The course has been developed to address the essential clinical assessment and examination skills to enable a differential diagnosis to be formulated and are required for the role as defined in the national competencies for advanced practice.  The course is designed to enhance relevant knowledge of anatomy and physiology as they underpin clinical assessment. 

The essential skills gained in this course or equivalent are required for practitioners wishing to undertake non-medical prescribing. 

This course is core requirement of the PgCert Advanced Clinical Practice programme.

PD50C2: CRITICAL SKILLS: READING AND ENGAGEMENT

First Term

This course will equip you with the essential skills required to engage with your postgraduate studies. Through a series of lectures, interactive seminars and authentic materials, you will build on your critical thinking skills with fellow PGT students from across the school. Critical Reading, essay writing and presentation skills will be offered as part of this course, providing students with skills fundamental to PGT and workplace contexts.

PD5501: MENTAL HEALTH AND WORKING WITH VULNERABLE GROUPS

15 credits

Level 5

Second Term

This course is designed to enhance insight and understanding of the challenges and opportunities for the overall provision of health and social care to vulnerable groups and those with mental health problems in general healthcare systems. The course will enable the practitioner to assess and manage a patient with mental health issues through the implementation of management strategies and in alignment with the broader legal framework.

PD55C1: CRITICAL SKILLS: RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATION

Second Term

This course will equip you with core research and dissemination skills. Centred on an interdisciplinary approach to research, the course will allow you to engage with peers from various research backgrounds to contribute, discuss and share in an interactive academic community. The course will detail key research techniques and communicative modes for successful dissemination. Communication skills specific to engaging with industry stakeholders will also be covered as part of this course in order to boost employability.

QQ5001: GETTING STARTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

First Term

This course, which is prescribed for all taught postgraduate students, is studied entirely online, is studied entirely online, takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete and can be taken in one sitting, or spread across the first 4 weeks of term.

Topics include University orientation overview, equality & diversity, MySkills, health, safety and cyber security, and academic integrity.
Successful completion of this course will be recorded on your Transcript as ‘Achieved’.
