Course Overview

This course explores the origins, theory, manifestations, and practice of diplomacy. This is achieved via a series of lectures, seminars, practical exercises, and simulations. Appropriate focus is also given to diplomatic skills (oral, written, and strategic).  The course provides an understanding of diplomacy and how it functions.

Course Description

This course explores the origins, theory, manifestations, and practice of diplomacy. The topics covered are

  • Origins of Modern Diplomacy & Theory of Diplomacy
  • Different Actors (Ambassadors, NGOs etc)
  • Advocacy and how Foreign Policy Works
  • How embassies operate - diplomatic reporting & briefing skills – art of negotiation
  • Different types of diplomacy – public, economic, cultural, development aid etc
  • Diplomacy and the future

Appropriate case studies will be examined throughout.
