The politics of climate change cannot be separated from those of the environment. The programme will centre on how modern relationships with the environment have brought the world to this point of climate crisis, while placing a critical lens over the solutions being brought forth. We will examine different framings of the environment and of the climate crisis, looking at the politics upholding particular framings over others. By the end of the 6-week course, students will attain a more critical understanding of the environment and climate as political spaces.

Environmental and Climate Politics will provide students with an overview of the international politics involved in shaping the environment and the well-being of the planet’s climate. There will be a focus on critical theory in order to understand how the environment is understood from different cultural understandings, and how it has been mobilised as a space through which actors have achieved their own political ends. The course will focus on: ties between environmental governance and history; key international gatherings and policies impacting environmental and climate health; and the disruptive role of environmental and climate justice movements.
