MB5526: GENES AND IMMUNITY (2024-2025)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:05

Course Overview

The genetic basis of self/non-self discrimination underlies all immune responses and can influence disease susceptibility at the level of both individual and populations. This course addresses this topic through lectures from research active experts in the main areas covered.

The course involves students delivering a media presentation on a course-related topic.

Course Description

The course will allow an understanding of how genetics defines 'yourself' to your immune system; how genetic mechanisms such as recombination and point mutation create diversity and specificity of immune effector molecules; how genetic variation in certain genes of the immune system can influence susceptibility or resistance to both autoimmune and infectious disease; how genetics can inform clinical therapies for such disease conditions; epigenetics will also be considered. Some of the material on this course will describe/discuss animal research.

A group presentation on a course-related topic provides the opportunity to practice valuable presentation skills. A practical session on flow cytometry gives you an introduction to this technique which is a fundamental tool for immunologists. You will be able to practice generic laboratory skills and gain hands-on experience of flow cytometry. The associated assessment will provide the opportunity to gain skills in critical analysis and evaluation of results, their presentation and the creation of a report. Development of team working skills, which are essential for future employment will be developed during these two in-course assessments.
