The course explores the history and nature of ICL, allowing students to develop their understanding of the core crimes, their evolution, and the path to the creation of the International Criminal Court. Through seminar discussions, students are encouraged to contribute their informed, evidenced perspectives on contemporary problems in international criminal law. These include the attempts to suppress international crimes through international cooperation, international initiatives to prosecute those accused of serious violations of international criminal law, and the limitations of the International Criminal Court, as well as its successes.

The course will be delivered through six substantive seminars. The first introduces the history and development of international criminal law, as well as how the current system operates. There are then four seminars which focus on the ‘core crimes’ in international criminal law: war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression. The final seminar will focus on the role of defences in international criminal law.
Students should prepare well for each seminar from an extensive reading list, through which both required and recommended reading is provided, and to contribute their considered perspectives on the texts to the seminars. There are general discussion questions included in the preparation materials for each seminar and this should guide their critical reading of the work, to allow students to lead the seminar discussions. The teaching staff are always happy to answer any questions about the material, and will guide the discussion to ensure that it remains relevant to the topic, where necessary.
