Course Overview

The aim of this course is to provide a structured method for researching various forms of materials and sources with a critical approach for evaluation and appraisal.  This course will allow the development of the necessary research skills required to undertake the independent project.  Other skills developed include CV preparation, interview practice and group working techniques.

Course Description

  1. Presentation skills: oral, written and electronic (lectures and practicals)[6 hours]
  2. Research skills in the Social Sciences [6 hours]
  3. Research skills in Science and Engineering [6 hours]
  4. Overview of the energy industry [12 hours]
  5. Ethics and diversity workshop [3 hours]
  6. Day trips and visits in the Aberdeen area [4 hours]
  7. Field trip to an area with a high concentration of oil and gas related businesses. There is a geological element, but overall we aim to demonstarate the range of support needed for oil and gas activity and some of the consequences of development. The trip enables the students to witness most aspects of the Project Life Cycle applied to the oil and gas industry [5 days of 8 hours = 40 hours; currently in northern Scotland]
