GL5206: THE NATURE OF GEOLOGICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DATA (2024-2025)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 10:58

Course Overview

This course introduces students to the fundamental types of geographical, geological, offshore survey, and geophysical data used within the Oil and Gas and related industries, with special emphasis on those types of data where the spatial position is crucial to the significance of the measurements. Attention will be given to the common sources of data, acquisition and capture, storage, processing, quality control, and analysis, and representation through mapping and visualisation.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of geographical, geological, offshore survey, and geophysical data, specifically the types of data used in the Oil and Gas and related industries. This will include coverage of the following: common data and spatial data types (e.g. raster and vector) and formats (e.g. raw or processed), data encoding and compression, data models, databases, and data catalogues. Attention will be given to the common sources of data, acquisition and capture, storage, processing, analysis, and representation through mapping and visualisation. Students will also be introduced to terrestrial and marine datums and geographical and projected coordinate systems as a basis for data integration and analysis within a Geographical Information System (GIS). Examples of terrestrial, coastal/marine, offshore survey, and geophysical datasets will be used to illustrate. These will include: remote sensing data (including UAVs), geographical and hydrographic data, gravity, magnetic and seismic data. The module will conclude by briefly considering access to and sharing of data, exploratory data analysis, Big Data, and data services including data ownership and licensing.
