Course Description

This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction and overview of the various engineering disciplines and processes that are fundamental to subsea engineering. By the end of the course, students will have gained a solid foundation in the design, analysis and operation of subsea systems, preparing them to tackle the complex challenges faced by subsea engineers.

The course begins with a broad introduction to subsea systems, including an overview of subsea control mechanisms. Students will then delve into the design, analysis and operation of essential subsea components. This includes detailed discussions on trees and manifolds, which are integral to the structure and function of subsea systems. Valves, jumpers, connectors and umbilicals will be examined for their roles in facilitating the control and flow of materials and signals within the subsea environment. Sensors, crucial for monitoring and data acquisition, will also be comprehensively covered.

In addition to the mechanical aspects, the course will provide a preliminary analysis of subsea electrical systems. This will involve an introduction to the key electrical concepts and analytical tools necessary for the understanding and designing the electrical infrastructure of subsea systems, so that they can successfully address the electrical requirements and tackle the challenges encountered in subsea operations.

Furthermore, the course will explore critical processes involved in subsea engineering, such as subsea intervention and compression, and will introduce reliability engineering principles.
