Last modified: 19 Sep 2024 15:16

Course Overview

This course enables students to learn about research skills in social anthropology. It will encourage reflexive awareness of the role of methods in the discipline that centres students’ own experiences. Topics will include the history of methods in anthropology, participant observation, writing fieldnotes, interviews and analysis amongst other themes. Case studies of how these skills are combined in practical fieldwork will be explored. Course Description

Through a series of classes and workshops, students will gain an introduction to a wide range of research skills and methods in social anthropology. These will include the history of methods in anthropology, participant observation, writing fieldnotes, interviews and analysis amongst other themes. Students will be expected to bring their own experiences of research methods and to reflect on their developing skills in anthropological research as the course proceeds. Alongside the classes, students will develop a small-scale ethnographic research project that they will plan, carry out and write up as the assessment for this course. Through the project they will demonstrate their understanding and experience of the research skills that are covered in the course. Assessment is split into two pieces, firstly a research proposal and secondly a project report.
