Global mental health is a rapidly growing area with the priorities of improving mental health and ensuring accessible treatment for all. However, there is a gap between the need for treatment and the provision of mental health resources.
This course will provide an overview of the challenges of providing effective mental health services and evidence-based treatments where these are currently less developed. It will also provide an opportunity to consider social and cultural factors that influence the development of mental health services.

Overall, this course will provide an overview of the challenges of providing effective mental health services and evidence-based treatments where resources are limited. It will also provide an opportunity to consider social and cultural factors that influence the development of mental health services, including populations’ needs.
The first part of the course will focus on the development and goals of global mental health. It will introduce you to the challenges regarding access to mental health resources in different settings, and provide an understanding of the burden of mental health disorders and the “mental health treatment gap” (for example, how do we address inequalities in mental health provision around the globe?). It will also explore the issues that arise as a result of emergencies and their effect on populations such as internally displaced people, refugees, and survivors of disasters.
The second part of the course includes the role and value of prevention and early intervention in mental health care, and how we can improve access to mental health treatment (both through clinical practice and capacity building).
Learning will be assessed through a range of methods, including multiple-choice question assessments, discussion board, and finally a case study that allows you to apply your mental health knowledge to analysis of a health system and policy responses.
