GG5070: WEBGIS AND ONLINE MAPPING (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2023 11:19

Course Overview

Today people from all walks of life use GIS maps on their desktops, via the web, on tablets and smartphones. The development of Web-GIS or Online Mapping has led to the move from the desktop standalone GIS software to the Internet.  In so doing it has revolutionised accessibility to geospatial data and information. Spatial data can rapidly be transformed into web-maps or services that are 'mashed' up with different layers into a web-GIS, Maps on the web have also provided a new paradigm for how people everywhere can access and use geographic data and information. Web-GIS has led to a more flexible and agile workflow and provides a platform for integrating GIS with other business systems, and has enabled cross-organizational collaboration. Web GIS allows organizations to properly manage all their geographic knowledge. At the heart of web GIS is a mapcentric content management system. Web mapping is more than just web cartography; it is a service by which consumers may choose what the map will show.

Course Description

Today people from all walks of life use GIS maps on their desktops, the web, on tablets and smartphones. Development of Web-GIS or Online Mapping has led to a move from standalone GIS software on the desktop to the Internet.  This has revolutionised accessibility to geospatial data/information. Spatial data can now rapidly be transformed into web-maps or services that are 'mashed' up with different layers into a Web-GIS. Web mapping has also provided a new paradigm for people to access and use geographic data and information everywhere. It has led to a more flexible and agile workflow and provided a platform for integrating GIS with other systems, enabling cross-organizational collaboration. Web GIS allows organizations to manage all their geographic data and information. At the heart of Web-GIS is a 'mapcentric' content management system. Web mapping is more than just web cartography; it is a service by which consumers choose what a map will show. This module introduces students to the use of the online GIS Internet environment to access and communicate geospatial data and information to a wider end-user community. The module provides students with insight into how (a) GIS is migrating onto the Internet in the form of so called Web-GIS and online mapping; (b) these tools and the information can be used as a spatial resource; and (c) the various resources such as OpenSource software can now easily be used to create an online mapping portal that not only provides access to information, but also a number of simple analytical tools to provide end-users with functionality to display and communicate information. Students will be introduced to a wide range of examples to illustrate how online GIS mapping is currently being developed, and will make use of free online GIS and mapping resources, Google Earth, as well as more sophisticated We-GIS tools as the basis to create online information systems, decision support systems (DSS), mashups, and virtual fieldtrips.
