This course will concentrate on the often protean process of writing fiction in longer forms, simultaneously exploring the potential of expanding, extending or even transforming students’ work. While creating prose, students will develop their understanding of fiction writing and storytelling but always in relation to exploring the potential of plot and character development. Students will arrive at satisfying samples of work with reasoned potential for expansion. Through supportive sessions, students will conclude the course with a completed, rounded segment of work but with clear ideas of plotting and where their story can journey on forward to.

Week 1. Character, Plot, Voice, Style: Favourite Books/Films.
Week 2. Flash Fiction. Dialogue. Short Stories. Plotting and visualising.
Week 3. Tense and Point of View. Staying with characters - or not.
Week 4. Practical Workshop.
Week 5. Plotting. Editing. Cutting. Expanding others’ work and own.
Week 6. Writing, plotting, editing Week.
Week 7. Workshop Feedback.
Week 8. Prose and film. Economy and visualising.
Week 9. Adapting work Screenplays. Dialogue
Week 10. Writing/expanding week
Week 11. Plotting Plans.
Week 12. Positive Conclusions.

In week 6, a mid-term short piece (or extract) of approximately 1500 words with plot ideas for further development must be submitted for an individual feedback session in Week 7. This feedback will comprise both formative and summative feedback delivered in oral and written form (drafts will be lightly copyedited) |

In week 12 students must submit a piece of prose fiction of no more than 4000 words (which includes a plot plan) together with an introductory essay of 1,500 words which will analyse the origins, development of the prose work and its forward planning, and evaluate its fulfilment of those intentions. |
