EG503N: OFFSHORE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2023 11:19

Course Overview

This course provides a detailed understanding of design considerations for components to be used in offshore environments, especially in terms of materials selection, qualification, standards and testing. Reasons for failure and the application of failure analysis in design will be studied. The course will be focussed on offshore steel structures relating to traditional energy applications; however, the fundamental knowledge gained can also be applied to structural integrity assessments in other marine applications including ships, submarines and offshore renewables. This course provides a detailed understanding of design considerations for components to be used in offshore environments, especially in terms of materials selection, qualification, standards and testing. Course Description

This course aims to provide knowledge of materials engineering and selection and failure and degradation issues in an offshore environment, including life cycle analysis; to understand and to apply the relevant design standards and selection guidelines; and to provide a detailed understanding related to fault finding and integrity management.

 Course Syllabus

  1. Principles of materials selection
  2. Materials and component qualification: design standards and testing/acceptance regimes
  3. Degradation processes – corrosion, erosion, stress corrosion
  4. Failure processes – fracture and fatigue
  5. Inspection techniques
  6. Integrity management procedures

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.
