Course Overview

This highly interactive course explores the principles and practice of contaminated land assessment and remediation. It provides broad knowledge of underlying science, as well as practical skills related to the assessment of contamination sources, pathways and risks to human health. While the lectures introduce theoretical background and gradually build the expertise, the practical have been based on various assessment tools and develop practical knowledge and quantitative skills. The learning activities replicate tasks that one would encounter in environmental consultancy and provide valuable transferrable skills.

Course Description

The course will enable you to develop a theoretical grounding in land remediation. Special attention will be paid to historical contamination, which has been linked to pollution of soils and groundwater, as well as negative effects on human health. You will explore this globally important topic through a range of assessment and management approaches, which showcase best practice. You will delve into what constitutes contamination, factors that make contaminants available and harmful, as well as suitability of various remediation techniques. The issues will be discussed in the context of differing environmental and regulatory parameters. The practical component of the course will provide you with key skills suited to an environmental officer that operates as part of a large company, consultancy or as a regulator.
