This course applies the principles of valuation to more complex real world examples. Topics covered include rent reviews, compulsory purchase, property investment, and property development, local and national taxation. Students are encouraged to critique traditional approaches to valuation and to consider contemporary alternatives. Numeracy and analytical skills are further developed along with expertise in the use of Excel. In addition, the course also covers professional surveying practice, including ethics, and stimulates discussion on contemporary issues and debates in the real estate industry.

The course will develop skills in the use of computer spreadsheets and valuation; DCF appraisal model and calculations of worth/investment value; premiums and surrender and renewal of leases; valuation of over-rented property; valuation of development properties; valuation of licensed premises. Recognition of Ethics, Rules of Conduct and Valuation standards as applied in professional practice. An introduction to the UK tax system & land and property tax computations; examination of valuation for rating and Council Tax; rateable occupation and the unit of valuation; the different methods used in calculating statutory valuations; the revaluation cycle/alteration of the Roll; appeal system.
