The course will develop knowledge and skills in both theory and practice on aspects of negotiation and mediation. The course will cover preparation for both a negotiation and a mediation and students will have the opportunity to conduct formative negotiations and mediations during the course.

The course will adopt a transaction based approach to negotiation and mediation. The course will develop knowledge and skills in both theory and practice on aspects of negotiation and mediation. The course will cover preparation for a negotiation, including conducting an assessment of the client's position; reviewing typical negotiation strategies; and assessing the range of potential outcomes. Students will conduct negotiations across a range of disciplines. The course will also cover preparation for mediation, including understanding what mediation entails, examining mediation skills and strategies, processing conflicting information, and client care.
Key skills will also be covered such as client interviewing, listening, advising, persuading, processing conflicting information, client care, drafting and transaction-based research.
The course will also provide opportunities to develop and enhance key transferable skills and address issues of confidentiality and ethical considerations in both the negotiation and mediation processes.
