Course Description

This is the dissertation course for the MSc in Political Activism and Campaigning.  It is the final element in an MSc programme where students develop their own independent, in-depth research project on an aspect of political activism and campaigning.  The 12,000-word dissertation builds on the foundational platform of the four programme courses, allowing students to apply the theoretical idea and concepts to a specific case or group of cases.   The precise topic will be agreed between the programme coordinator and student, but it should connect the overall themes of the programme with an independent research project, addressing the theme of what makes a successful campaign, and how protest turns to power.  The dissertation course is completed individually by each student, but it is closely supervised by a member of academic staff who will provide guidance and advice suitable for that topic.  Students are expected to carefully consider research design and methodology, to develop an appropriate case study analysis of a real-world campaign (or group of campaigns), and to demonstrate critical thinking and writing appropriate at this level.  Through the delivery of a research report, students will produce a critical evaluation of the impact of political activism and campaigning.
