Course Description

In this course, students consider how activists campaign by communicating. This involves exploring two sets of ideas which run through the course. The first is that activism is communicative. It involves meaning-making, dissent and persuasion.  The second is about the affordances and use of media. Media enable activists to campaign in different ways, and these ways are in turn shaped by the communication ecology of which they are a part. This course takes an expansive view of media and considers the affordances of new (digital) media and old media like protests alike.

This course explores these ideas by examining in detail the different ways that activists use different media to:

  1. Make meanings, collectivities and movements.
  2. Contest and advocate ideas.
  3. Gain attention and shape content in communication ecologies.
