This course is about activism as communication. It studies how activists pursue their causes by persuading publics of their ideas. It studies how they bring these ideas and causes into being. In particular this course is about contemporary activism, which means activism in the digital age(s). It puts technologies of communication at the centre. It focuses on how media enable activisms to campaign in different ways. It studies these issues around the globe.

In this course, students consider how activists campaign by communicating. This involves exploring two sets of ideas which run through the course. The first is that activism is communicative. It involves meaning-making, dissent and persuasion. The second is about the affordances and use of media. Media enable activists to campaign in different ways, and these ways are in turn shaped by the communication ecology of which they are a part. This course takes an expansive view of media and considers the affordances of new (digital) media and old media like protests alike.
