On this course, students will learn to identify and develop the non-academic impact of their philosophy research. They will learn a range of skills and techniques for engaging with the public, exchanging knowledge with organizations outside the university, and communicating their research to diverse audiences. Students will develop engagement and impact activities suitable for outside organizations and based on their own research interests, with guidance and training from academic staff and public engagement experts.

On this course, students will learn to identify and develop the non-academic impact of their philosophy research. They will learn a range of skills and techniques for engaging with the public, exchanging knowledge with organizations outside the university, and communicating their research to diverse audiences. Students will develop engagement and impact activities suitable for outside organizations and based on their own research interests, with guidance and training from academic staff and public engagement experts. Topics to be covered include designing an impact-oriented research project; writing an impact statement; knowledge exchange; engaging with non-academic audiences; and evaluating and assessing the impact of research.

Students will do a poster presentation to members of the class and, optionally, other members of the Philosophy department, either at a course conference or at another departmental event. In the presentation students reflect on their project, engagement activities, and knowledge exchange, and evaluate the impact of their activities. They will be assessed on the oral presentation and the poster, a copy of which must be submitted before the event takes place. The poster may be either physical or virtual. Informal feedback will be given through peer discussion. Formal feedback will be given by teaching staff on the standard feedback form, with further oral feedback available if requested. |

Students will write a short piece communicating the outcomes of their research to a broad audience. It will be posted on the course blog, and could optionally be submitted for publication in other venues. Informal feedback will be given through peer comments on the course blog.
