Readings in Philosophy and Society is a directed reading course offering students the opportunity to engage at length and in depth with the philosophical literature on a topic relevant to problems or questions concerning society. Students will choose from a list of approved topics made available at the beginning of each year and will be subject to the availability of Philosophy staff to supervise. Assessment will include one review of a paper/book of 1,500 words (20%) and one essay of 4,000 words (80%).

The course is a required element of the MLitt in Philosophy and Society degree. It is a directed reading course and the content of the course will depend on the interests of the student and the availability of Philosophy staff to supervise on the topic during any given year. Students will each select a topic from a list of approved options that will be provided at the beginning of each year. The structure of the course is supervised reading, research, and discussion. Students will be assigned to a staff member in the relevant field who, in discussion with the student, will develop a list of specific reading areas to be covered over the semester and to offer initial guidance (e.g. questions, reading lists, potential essay topics). Students will conduct reading related to the topic and meet the supervisor (and other students if applicable) every two weeks to discuss their reading and progress on the review and essay. Thus, students will receive approximately 6 hours of supervision over the 12-week period. Assessment will include one review of a paper/book of 1,500 words (20%) and one essay of 4,000 words (80%).
