ME5044: APPLIED PHARMACOLOGY AND CLINICAL SKILLS IN PRESCRIBING (2022-2023)

Course Overview

This course focuses on the clinical pharmacology and therapeutics together with related science knowledge and clinical skills required for safe and effective advanced practice in medicines management and prescribing.

This course constitutes one part of the SCQF 11 Independent and Supplementary Prescribing Programme. Those students who wish to register with their governing body as Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribers will have to successfully complete this course together with the course Prescribing in Practice course.

A prerequisite for undertaking this course is the successful completion of both Fundamentals of clinical method and decision making (I) and Fundamentals of clinical method and decision making (II) courses, or equivalent.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to allow healthcare practitioners working in advanced and autonomous roles to expand their knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics and related clinical sciences. They will apply this knowledge in the clinical domain enhancing their ability to assess and manage patients presenting with acute and/or complex long term health problems.

The outcomes of this course are mapped to the document “A Competency Framework for all Prescribers” produced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the current guidance from the NMC.
