Course Overview

This course develops students' Old Norse skills, building on those gained in Old Norse 1, by studying more advanced language topics and introducing more complex texts such as poetry, runes and unnormalised Old Norse. Poetry and runes can offer a fascinating insight into the pre-Christian Old Norse world and present opportunities to consider the mediality and challenges of a variety of source types. In addition, students will read and discuss a variety of sources for thinking about early Scandinavian society will consider the latest positions in research in the field.

Course Description

This course aims to develop intermediate Old Norse skills by reading and translating real Old Norse texts, including poetry and runes, and to explore the use of these sources for understanding the pre-literary world of Scandinavia. In addition, students will gain a broader knowledge of early Scandinavian society via a range of primary and secondary sources and thematic seminar discussion.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Read complex Old Norse texts with the aid of a dictionary and grammar
  • Critically evaluate Old Norse-English translations and demonstrate an understanding of the choices and compromises involved in translating
  • Analyse poetic and runological phenomena for their value in understanding the society and culture of pre-literary Scandinavia.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key topics relating to early Scandinavian history and society.
