The purpose of this course is to help students become a researcher, developing skills that are essential to successfully undertaking research, interacting with others in the research community and communicating research findings to different audiences. Course assessment is designed to allow students to develop their research interests and reflect on different approaches to ‘doing’ research.

Tailored specifically to the needs of early career researchers and intended to align with the skills development requirements of individual students, course content will be drawn from the following topics:
* students will be expected to attend research seminars organised by the School of Geosciences, other academic units within the University and by external organisations such as the James Hutton Institute. Participation – in person or virtual - in external research events aligned with individual students’ research interests will be encouraged
