This course explores models of disability and health belief in relation to oral care.

The legal and ethical frameworks covered are put in to the context of special care dentistry and oral care.

Course Description

The course focusses on disability and how medical and social constructs can be used to inform appropriate clinical oral care and health promotion programmes

You will demonstrate an understanding of models of health behaviour related to disability including a discussion of the medical versus social model of disability emphasising the emotional impact of disability in order to design a suitable health promotion activity. .

You will consider theory and practice of capacity and consent related to special care dentistry including the relevance to treatment planning and consideration of clinical holding and pharmacological and non-pharmacological anxiety management

You will develop an understanding of communication including nonverbal communication

You will develop an understanding of Disability in relation to service planning in order to develop a patient pathway for a Special Care Group.
