Course Description

Social entrepreneurship is concerned with addressing unmet social needs. To date, there is an increased social consciousness for ideas devoted to social change. However, developing and managing social enterprises successfully is a daunting challenge.  In this course we will focus on the practices and processes required to manage social enterprises effectively. Students will learn how social entrepreneurship is devoted towards transforming social and economic value rather than profit generation.

The course examines ideas and practices for addressing social needs. It will equip students with the theory, knowledge and skills to effect positive changes beyond wealth generation. These include providing students with the relevant set of theories, insights and tools necessary to develop and manage social enterprises. Emphasis will be placed on how students can start their own social entrepreneurship projects.

Through an integrated approach to teaching activities, the course will provide students with the tools and knowledge articulate a societal issue. Students will discover how to build and grow their own entrepreneurial project with a focus on social change with the goal of bettering society.

The learning and teaching approach is one of offering learning for, and through, social entrepreneurship. This involves utilising theoretical models and frameworks and applying them to practical social impact scenarios.

You will be provided with responsive, engaging and interactive learning materials which will include a general introduction to the topic together with core academic theory. You will also be directed to a variety of other learning sources including (e-)books, (e-)journals and other web-based resources to support your learning and acquire knowledge for yourself. The readings are drawn from research in the social entrepreneurship. The workshop cases provide an extensive opportunity to integrate and apply these tools in a practical, business context, and draw from a wide variety of social organisations.
