This course will provide a thorough understanding of the mechanisms regulating embryonic and fetal development. Factors influencing normal and abnormal development, including, genes and the environment, will be discussed. The impact of developmental biology upon reproductive and regenerative medicine, including stem cells, cloning, gene editing and genetic manipulation technologies, as well as the ethical considerations, will be evaluated.

This course will provide a thorough understanding of the mechanisms regulating embryonic and fetal development. Factors influencing normal and abnormal development, including, genes and the environment, will be discussed. The impact of developmental biology upon reproductive and regenerative medicine, including stem cells, cloning, gene editing and genetic manipulation technologies, as well as the ethical considerations, will be evaluated.
Assessment is through a combination of written assessment, oral presentation, and by examination.

The report is based on the Debate and is a reassessment of the evidnece discussed to form a recommendation to a Governing Body based on the topic of the debate, to include ethics and regulatory requirements. Reports due one week after debate and feedback provided 1 week later - to look at recmmendation accuracy, content andif the evidence discussed relates to the recommendation. |

This debate will allow each student to present a role/opinion/expertise on a topic in developmental biology. They will be expected to debate their given role with the other students. The idea is to discuss latest advances in the field and discuss ethical/moral concerns. The debate will be in Week 32 and each student assessed on their input, subject material discussed and question asking of other students. Verbal feedback will be provided on the day. |

Preparation for the Debate and for the Written Report. To discuss how a debate works and issue roles for each student to study beforehand. To go over the written report and what is required and the level of detail needed. No formal feedback given - as this will be an information tutorial on how to prepare and present debate and report. |
