Course Description

This course introduces remote sensing - the acquisition of information from a distance, typically via airborne and spaceborne sensors, and the integration and analysis of remotely sensed data in a geospatial environment. The students will learn about different approaches to explore spatial data collection, analysis and geo-visualisation with the practical use of ArcGIS (and other) GIS software.

Outline of topics:

  1. Main principles behind remote sensing
  2. Remote sensing in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum
  3. Basic remote sensing techniques
  4. Real aperture radar
  5. Synthetic aperture radar
  6. Communications systems for signal transmission
  7. Nature of spatial data, map co-ordinate systems, map projections, and datums
  8. Basics of geospatial analysis
  9. Fundamentals of Cartography, Map Design and Geo-visualisation
  10. Practical exercises using GIS Software such as ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro, QGIS
