EV5803: LAND USE AND THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT (2021-2022)

Course Overview

This course is a residential field course that takes place in the Cairngorm National Park. During this course will gain experience relating to the broad theme of environmental science. It is hoped that you will develop a greater understanding of the dynamics of the landscape and the interactions and conflicts between stakeholders. You will be focusing on issues associated with different land uses within the Cairngorms National Park and associated decisions which impact directly the environment. This will be done by a number of site visits to sporting estates, forests, farms, and national nature reserves.

In 2021/22 the residential part of this course will run 4th April – 8th April 2022, with assessments due 15th and 22nd April 2022.

Course Description

• Four-day residential field course with one reflection day on campus.
• The aim of this course help you develop a greater understanding of the dynamics of the landscape and the interactions and conflicts between stakeholders.
• Visits to sporting estates, forests (plantation and semi-natural), farms, river management, and national nature reserves are used to exemplify the complex relationships between semi-natural and management environments and the people that occupy and use them.
• You will gain an understanding of the potential for conflict and understanding the complications involved where there are multiple land uses.
• Reflect upon what sustainability means within a national park setting and the the importance of people in conservation / environmental management.
• Consider how current economic activity regularly creates unintended environmental and social consequences and how different business are run within a National Park.
