Fundamental risk and process safety concepts are discussed, and many historical accident scenarios are reviewed to help students gain an appreciation for the complexities involved in managing risks in the process industries. Students assess measures of risk, as well as social issues of risk perception. Risk management across the life cycle of a process system is explored, in conjunction with inherently safer design principles. Key methods around hazard identification, consequence modelling and likelihood estimation, as precursors for estimating risk, are thoroughly examined as a central part of process safety and risk management practice. Broader issues around process safety management systems, human factors, complex systems, resilience engineering and regulatory matters are also considered. This unit uses a problem-based learning framework and develops systems thinking skills.”
Under the Collaborative Masters Agreement with Curtin University, the teaching, assessment, coordination, and quality assurance of the Curtin University version of this course (CHEN5006) are the responsibility of Curtin University. MSc Global Subsea Engineering students are registered as full-time students at Curtin University.
This University of Aberdeen coded course exists solely as a placeholder into which grades obtained while students are studying with Curtin University are entered (after conversion to CGS). The University of Aberdeen does not directly teach or assess students on this course. This University of Aberdeen course code is only used to facilitate degree classifications for MSc Global Subsea Engineering students.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
