This course is in two parts. The well engineering part provides students with an overview of a rotary drilling system and associated drilling components. The types, selection and characteristics of drilling fluids are discussed, and the analysis of the flow of drilling fluids during drilling is presented. Strategies for the selection and design of casings, cementing methodologies as well as design and configuration of completion systems are introduced, with emphasis on safety implications. Challenges of directional and horizontal drilling methods and associated technologies discussed. In the second part, production engineering, fluid flow in the well bore with a view to production of resources is considered. Completions components and methods are introduced. Emphasis is placed on factors which inhibit oil and gas production as well as practical approaches to production enhancement. Computer modelling of oil and gas production is introduced. A range of industry relevant case studies are used to support students’ learning.
