CM5046: DRUG METABOLISM AND PHARMACOKINETICS (DMPK) (2021-2022)

Last modified: 31 May 2022 13:05

Course Overview

This course introduces a core discipline within drug discovery, namely drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK). DMPK is primarily concerned with safety evaluation, drug absorption and how a drug is metabolised. The course will combine an introduction to basic pathways of enzymatic xenobiotic metabolism, the measurement and modelling of drug and metabolite concentrations and the regulatory framework overseeing this stage of drug development.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK). DMPK is primarily concerned with safety evaluation in drug development. In recent times DMPK has become a core discipline within drug discovery, development and post-marketing.

Basic pathways of enzymatic xenobiotic metabolism will be explained. The course will go on to explain standard methodologies for measuring drug and metabolite concentrations in biological fluids (bioanalysis) and to promote an understanding of how this data is modelled using pharmacokinetics. The course will conclude by covering the regulatory requirements and guidance set out by the main government and international agencies that are relevant to conducting this work during pharmaceutical development.
