The aim of this course is to introduce students to the clinical work of applied psychologists within the NHS. The task of the applied psychologist is to use clinical skills and knowledge to understand client’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour through the collaborative development of a psychological formulation. Formulations aim to explain the development and maintenance of an individual’s difficulties, integrating a wide range of interpersonal, biological, social and cultural factors, leading to a plan for intervention. Lecturers, who are all applied psychologists, will use case examples from their clinical practice to demonstrate the use of formulation in understanding clients difficulties and will then describe some of the interventions used to help alleviate psychological distress.
