Last modified: 05 Aug 2021 13:04

Course Overview

This course allows students the opportunity to deploy the knowledge they have gained in the taught courses on the LLM Oil and Gas Law programme in two intensive week-long exercises designed to develop their professional skills. The first of these involves an insight into the building of a commercial case to farm-in to a petroleum licence whilst the second puts students in the position of state or commercial actors negotiating a Production Sharing Agreement. This course is available to students on the LLM Oil and Gas Law with Professional Skills programme.

Course Description

The course is delivered as two simulations. In the first, the students receive a briefing document giving background information to oil and gas production in a particular jurisdiction. Working in groups, they then play the role of an adviser in an oil and gas exploration and production company, receiving email requests from the VP Exploration to return information and briefings. Through meeting these requests the students will ‘build’ the business case, presenting it first as presentation to a simulated Board and second as a report. They will also analyse certain legal and regulatory issues impacting the development of the business case, preparing a second report. In the second simulation, students will work in groups negotiating the key terms of a Production Sharing Agreement from the perspective either of the state or the contractor. They will receive sessions dealing with negotiation theory and techniques before conducting the negotiation itself. They will afterward prepare a paper reflecting on the exercise and identifying what worked and what they would do differently in future.
