The course will provide an understanding for petroleum data managers from legal, commercial and security standpoints of contemporary legal challenges involving data protection and privacy from commercial, state and activist perspectives such as big data and data mining; intellectual property, trade secrets and standards; regulatory frameworks; responses to activities such as malware; risk in contracts and general legal bases for liability; and information security management.

The course will provide an understanding for petroleum data managers from legal, commercial and security standpoints of contemporary legal challenges involving data protection and privacy from commercial, state and activist perspectives such as big data and data mining; challenges of power and control arising from intellectual property, trade secrets and standards; evolving industrial regulatory frameworks notably regarding the UK Oil and Gas Authority, Health and Safety Executive and the Information Commissioner; responses to activities such as malware including from the reputational perspective and attitude of funders; addressing risk in contracts (such as employment, production, contractor) and general legal bases for liability; information security management and technical standards; management response frameworks and disaster recovery.
