GL5546: APPLIED, INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH GEOPHYSICS (2020-2021)

Last modified: 05 Aug 2021 13:04

Course Overview

This module will take students to the boundaries of applied geophysics. The course content is drawn from recent high-impact academic research, advanced industry geophysics case studies, dedicated applied geophysics training and PhD research skills. It provides skills that open up career paths to graduates both within and outside the resource industries. The balance between topics may shift from year to year in response to changing patterns of research and changing employer demand.

Course Description

Nominally split into three topic areas, this module will add extra training in specific areas of: 1) Applied Geophysics; 2) Industry Geophysics; 3) Research Geophysics. Drawing on international expertise from internal and external teaching staff, students will gain hands-on experience in current ‘hot topics’ through lectures, tutorials and self-directed exercises to expand on their skills gained in other areas of the MSc Geophysics curriculum.

For Applied Geophysics, typical subject areas could be:

  • Mining geophysics
  • Archaeological geophysics
  • Humanitarian and forensic geophysics
  • Civil engineering geophysics

For Industry Geophysics, typical subject areas could be:

  • The energy transition
  • Quantitative seismic interpretation
  • AVO and inversion techniques
  • Velocity model building and inversion

For Research Geophysics, typical subject areas could be:

  • PhD research and publishing
  • Ongoing debates in geophysics
  • Case studies in volcano seismology, hazards, environmental geophysics, etc.
  • Planetary geophysics
