This work-based placement elective offers a professional placement with a government/public, industrial, civic or voluntary
health and/or development sector organisation. Students will undertake a ten-week placement with a host organisation, either within the organisation, remotely from Aberdeen, or using a combination of both. University of Aberdeen staff will co-supervise student placements. Placements are subject to availability and are offered on a competitive basis.

The aims of this course are to:
This course consists of a student-led placement with a host organisation and joint University of Aberdeen supervision. Students will spend 200 hours actively working for a host organisation, over a ten-week period. In addition, students will: participate in six two-hour professional development workshops with the University (12 hours) and will: undertake work-related training with their host organisation; have project-focused and self-development focused meetings with their host organisation lead and Course Coordinator; and will spend time on self-study and preparation for assessments (a total of 88 hours).
A placement applications process will take place during the January – March sub session. It will involve meetings with the Course Coordinator, discussions with potential hosts (including: expressions of interest; CV sharing; informal interviews (where required) and appointment confirmation ahead of the course start date.
Some placements will be group-based but each student will be assigned an individual role and assessments will be completed individually.

Workplace output: The aim of this assessment is to facilitate the application of students’ academic knowledge and skills in a work environment and to enhance their experience. Students are asked to prepare a written report that documents the work they have been asked to undertake on behalf of their placement host organisation. It will include background information on the project, aim, methods, results/products, and implications of the work completed for the organisation. The assessment will be marked using a practical report rubric and feedback will be given individually to students within 3 weeks of submission. |

Roles and responsibilities placement agreement : The aim of this assessment is to enable students to develop skills in agreeing roles and responsibilities with stakeholders and preparing agreement documentation (all transferable skills to enhance student employability). Students will be given a reflective report proforma and will detail information on their project plan, roles and responsibilities for them, the host organisation and the University, and a risk assessment. Students will then meet to agree with stakeholders and will be asked reflective questions based on their experiences of writing and discussing the placement agreement. The maximum word limit for the agreement reflective report is 1000 words, not including tables or figures. The assessment will be marked using a marking guide and feedback will be given individually to students within 3 weeks of submission. |

Professional development, objective setting, appraisal, and skills matrices: The aim of this assessment is to provide students with opportunities to strategically develop a range of transferable skills, as well as our Graduate Attributes and to enhance student employability. This case study report assessment is in the form of an appraisal document, which consists of professional development components, including structured objectives and appraisals, plus before and after skills matrices. Students are provided with an appraisal proforma to complete for this report, and the maximum word limit is 1500 words, not including matrices, tables, figures or references. The assessment will be marked using a case study rubric and feedback will be given individually to students within 3 weeks of submission.
