LN5531: CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN LANGUAGE TEACHING & LEARNING (2019-2020)

Last modified: 25 Sep 2019 09:58

Course Overview

In this course, students will learn about the relevance of creativity in both language teaching and learning. Students will be asked to think more deeply about what creativity means, how it relates to teaching and learning strategies and outcomes, and how they, as teachers, can better enact creativity in their classroom practices. Further, with an ever-growing emphasis on enriching creativity and thinking skills in ESL/EFL education, the course will also consider how language teaching has changed, and indeed continues to change, and the possible reasons and implications for innovations in the field that are happening around the world.

Course Description

The course will explore what creativity and innovation mean in the context of second language education and why these topics are especially important at the present time. Students will learn about theories of creativity before applying the concepts directly to language teaching and learning. Through this course, students will better understand what creativity is, why it is important in TESOL, and how teachers can implement and nurture it in their practice. The learning outcomes aim to enable students to modify textbook exercises for creativity, design creative activities of their own, build creativity into the curriculum, forge a classroom climate conducive to language exploration, and learn to be a guide in the discovery process. Further, students will investigate important innovations in language teaching, particularly as they pertain to curriculum development and assessment, and better understand the locally-driven rationales and global trends that have provoked recent transformations.
