Course Overview

This course will focus on key concepts, hypotheses and models related TESOL-oriented theories of learning, including behaviourist, cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives. The structure of this course will facilitate development of and reflection on teaching beliefs and teaching philosophy. Strengths and weaknesses of common learning theories will be identified and their applicability to the English language teaching context will be examined.

Course Description

This course will focus on key concepts, hypotheses and models related TESOL-oriented theories of learning, including behaviourist, cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives. The structure of this course will facilitate development of and reflection on teaching beliefs and teaching philosophy. Strengths and weaknesses of common learning theories will be identified and their applicability to the English language teaching context will be examined.

Course Aims

Students will:
1. develop an in-depth understanding of TESOL-oriented learning theories.
2. evaluate a range of theories of learning using authentic language data and existing research,
3. critically reflect on the potential applications of learning theories in the EFL classroom context,
4. relate the existing research on learning theories to teaching practice in the classroom,
5. analyse how learning theories and principles relate to their beliefs about EFL teaching.
