What is happening now in the field of early Scandinavian Studies? What are its biggest questions, concerns and influences? How is new research developed, and why is it important? This course exposes students to cutting-edge research in the field, via research seminars and recently-published papers. It encourages you to start to think in big picture terms about the field, and prepares you for researching and writing your own dissertation by thinking explicitly and critically about the field, its questions and directions.

This course exposes students to cutting-edge research in the field of early Scandinavian Studies, via both research seminars and recently-published papers. It encourages students to start to think in big picture terms about the field, in particular parts of its historiography and some of its current directions. It provides students with an insight into the ways in which new research is developed and disseminated and of the implicit and explicit positions and approaches that underlie it. It also asks students to consider what research is ‘for’ and why it is important. Besides equipping students with an understanding of the state of the art within the secondary literature in their field of interest, the course helps students prepare for researching and writing their own dissertation by thinking explicitly and critically about the field, what it means to make an independent contribution, and the all-important ‘so what?’. Students will attend at least two research seminars in the Centre for Scandinavian Studies seminar series, and will independently read recently-published work on relevant topics.
