This course is designed for Academic Foundation Program (AFP) doctors, although it is also open to any doctor aspiring to clinical academia. You will be provided with training in generic research skills within a clinical context to allow you to develop your skills towards a career in academic medicine. The teaching combines interactive and practical approaches which will facilitate your understanding of the important strategies and approaches that will underpin your future research career.

The content will cover a theoretical and evidence-based background to generic research skills within the context of clinical research. Taught by a multi-disciplinary team from the College of Life Sciences and Medicine and NHS Grampian, specific topics to be covered include:
· Data handling/results assimilation and statistics
· Questionnaire design
· Literature search strategies
· Critical review
· Epidemiology
· The role of ethics
· Scientific writing/presentation skills
· Laboratory safety
· Laboratory note keeping
· Practical demonstrations of microbiological, cellular and molecular biological techniques
· Performing of these microbiological, cellular and molecular biological techniques by all students

Assessment will comprise continuous assessment (100%). The continuous assessment marking will comprise: 1. Scientific writing assessment (15%) 2. Critical appraisal (15%) 3. Data handling (15%) 4. Library searching assignment (10%) 5. Systematic review protocol (15%) 6. Laboratory Research assignments (30%) comprising written summary (notebook and write-up (80%)) and group oral presentation (20%)
